The open education system in Türkiye is a flexible option that allows individuals to follow their university education from a distance, which provides wide opportunities for local and international students.

Concept: Open education in Turkey is an educational system approved by the Turkish Higher Education Council, which allows students to obtain university education via the Internet and digital resources without the need for personal attendance on the campus. This system is an ideal alternative to traditional education, as it provides flexibility in organizing time and allows students to continue their education along with their other obligations.

Who Can Join Open Education?

The open education system in Türkiye is available to all individuals who wish to pursue university education, regardless of age or educational background. There is no specific cumulative GPA requirement for enrollment, making it accessible to many individuals who might not have achieved high grades in secondary school but still have the desire to continue their educational journey.

Istanbul University (İstanbul Üniversitesi)

Required GPA:

There is no specific GPA requirement for joining the open education system in Türkiye, which allows many individuals to continue their university education.

Costs:

  • The tuition fees for open education in Türkiye vary depending on the university and program, generally ranging from $500 to $2,000 per year.
  • Fees may differ based on whether the program is undergraduate or graduate (master’s).

How to Register and Required Documents:

  • Registration Period: Registration for open universities starts in September each year.
  • Required Documents:
  • Personal photo, residence permit or passport copy, high school certificate, and equivalency of the certificate for international students, YÖS exam results (if applicable).
  • Equivalency Certificate: After the student is accepted, they will need to provide the high school certificate equivalency (for foreign students).
  • If the student loses their latest academic certificate, they can take an assessment test to determine the academic level they need to join. The university will then decide on the number of compulsory courses and study hours appropriate to their level.
  • For students with an Arabic certificate who wish to join open education in Türkiye, they must first get the certificate adjusted (Denklik) from the Turkish Ministry of Education and then complete the necessary documents at Halk Eğitim.
  • For students accepted through the YÖS exam, they cannot enroll unless they are proficient in Turkish.

Note:
The YÖS exam is a university entrance exam required for admission. The minimum passing score is 30% in Atatürk University and Istanbul University, and 20% in Anadolu University.
