Strong Storm Rips Roofs off Houses in Turkey
Several areas in Turkey experienced a strong storm that ripped off many building roofs, damaged cars, and caused trees, power poles, and traffic lights to fall.
According to local media, a child was injured when they got trapped under a tree that fell due to the winds near the Sulaqzadeh Mufti Mosque in the Palandoken district. The child, who was taken to Ataturk University Research Hospital, is still receiving treatment.
The strong winds have negatively affected the lives of citizens, with debris from buildings turning some vehicles into junk. Several building roofs, workplaces, and schools were also damaged. The winds caused rooftops to fly off, damaging vehicles, and bringing down power poles, traffic lights, and billboards.
Metal sheets and poles from a building’s roof in the Yildizkent area fell onto a parked car near a TOKI building in Gat Yolu, about 100 meters away. The vehicle was flipped due to the strong winds and was damaged.
In the Yunus Emre district, debris from a house roof destroyed part of the building’s wall.
Weather Warnings for the Coming Hours
In the same context, Turkey's General Directorate of Meteorology issued a statement saying cold and rainy weather will continue across the country, with storm warnings for some areas.
The meteorology office urged citizens to be cautious and prepared for possible disruptions in transportation.
According to the statement, strong winds and storms are expected from the south starting from this afternoon in Eastern Anatolia, Kayseri, Eastern Sivas, Gumushane, Bayburt, Northern Kahramanmaras, South and East Diyarbakir, Mardin, Batman, and Sirte.
The meteorology office stressed the importance of taking precautions against negative situations such as transportation disruptions, roof collapses, falling trees or poles, poisoning from stoves and natural gas, and landslides in high-altitude areas.
