Turkey is planning to put restrictions on kids using social media
The move comes after a parliamentary report called for wide-ranging measures, including age verification and content filtering.
According to media and parliamentary sources, the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), led by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, is expected to submit a draft law on the issue soon.
Family and Social Services Minister Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş said the proposed law would include a ban on social media for minors and would require service providers to set up content-filtering systems.
The recommendations also include removing harmful content without prior notice and monitoring video games or AI-powered games used by children to check for dangerous material.
The Turkish parliament’s report also suggests limiting internet use at night on devices used by anyone under 18, making content filtering mandatory on social media until age 18, and completely banning social media for kids under 16.
It’s worth noting that the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging app Discord, and the story-sharing site Wattpad have already been blocked in Turkey since 2024.
