After the big earthquake: 184 aftershocks recorded in Istanbul

Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that 184 aftershocks have hit Istanbul following the major 6.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the city on Tuesday.

In a statement, AFAD warned that more tremors are expected in the coming days and urged people to stay away from dangerous buildings. They explained that, “Aftershocks can continue for a while after a major quake, and some of them could still be strong.”

The statement also mentioned that the seismic activity is mostly focused along a 10 to 15 km stretch heading east.

So far, 184 aftershocks have been recorded, including seven with magnitudes of 4.0 or higher.

AFAD strongly advised people not to enter damaged buildings until technical teams inspect them and confirm they’re structurally safe.

Geological analysis showed a rupture along the fault line that’s about 15 km long and 9.5 km wide, with a slip of around 30 centimeters.

AFAD also told citizens to ignore rumors circulating on social media and only trust official sources for updates. They added that, “There’s still a chance of strong aftershocks,” and reminded everyone to stay calm and follow safety guidelines.

The original earthquake hit the Silivri coast of Istanbul at 12:49 PM yesterday, and it was felt throughout much of the Marmara region. People rushed into the streets in panic.

AFAD shared several important tips online for staying safe after the quake:

  • Don’t enter damaged buildings under any circumstances

  • Stay away from hazardous structures

  • Use text messages or internet-based messaging apps to contact others

  • Follow only official instructions and warnings
