Turkey's Minister of Transport, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, announced the introduction of age restrictions for social media use, with the minimum age being set at 16 years old.
Uraloğlu stated in a press interview that the aim of this measure is to protect younger age groups from the risks that may arise from uncontrolled social media use, such as exposure to inappropriate content, digital addiction, and negative effects on mental health.
He also mentioned that the ministry is working on creating clear regulations and laws in collaboration with relevant authorities to ensure the effective implementation of this decision.
Uraloğlu added: "The decision to set the age at 16 is based on international studies and similar experiences that have proven effective in reducing negative impacts on young people. Many countries have previously taken similar steps."
This announcement by the Turkish minister is part of the government's efforts to strengthen the safe digital environment and provide protection for children and teenagers, while also promoting digital awareness among citizens, especially as users in the country are occasionally exposed to digital fraud.
