
Istanbul Ranks First in the Number of People Living Alone
The Turkish Statistical Institute revealed that the city of Istanbul ranked first in the number of people living alone.
The number of single-person households in Türkiye was recorded at 3 million 491 thousand 148 in 2017, 3 million 730 thousand 505 in 2018, and 4 million 62 thousand 576 in 2019.
The increase in the number of people living alone became more noticeable in 2020 and 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic spread, this number rose by 342 thousand 421 to reach 4 million 404 thousand 997.
Over the past ten years, the number of single-person households increased the most in 2021, when the effects of the pandemic continued. In that year, the number of single-person households increased by 376 thousand 603 compared to 2020, reaching 4 million 781 thousand 600.
The number of people living alone rose by 285 thousand 731 to 5 million 67 thousand 331 in 2022, and by 125 thousand 494 to 5 million 192 thousand 825 in 2023.
Last year, the number of people living alone increased by 128 thousand 715 to reach 5 million 321 thousand 540.
Thus, the number of people living alone has increased by 71% over the past ten years.
