Three Earthquakes in the Aegean Sea and Tsunami Warnings
The Aegean Sea experienced three earthquakes in the past day, one with a magnitude of 4.7, followed by a second with a magnitude of 4.2, and a third earthquake with a magnitude of 4.0, causing panic in Türkiye.
The Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Türkiye (AFAD) stated in a report that the first earthquake occurred at a depth of 7 kilometers at 23:19 local time in Türkiye. The second earthquake took place at a depth of 13.88 kilometers at 23:39 local time in Türkiye, and the third earthquake, of similar strength, occurred at 20:44 local time in the Aegean Sea off the country's western coast.
The Earthquake Research and Study Center at Balıkesir University has warned of the possibility of a tsunami due to the intense seismic activity in the Aegean region in recent days.
Professor Dr. İbrahim Türkmen, the director of the center, explained that the region could experience earthquakes with magnitudes between 6 and 7 on the Richter scale, which increases the likelihood of tsunami waves affecting the southern coasts of the Aegean Sea, particularly in the tourist areas of Bodrum and Datça.
Türkmen noted that about 500 small earthquakes have been recorded in the northeastern part of the Aegean Sea, near the island of Santorini, over the past few days, with the largest reaching a magnitude of 4.8. This type of seismic activity is classified as "earthquake storms," which are often linked to volcanic activity and active fault lines beneath the sea.
Türkmen called on residents of coastal areas, especially the tourist centers in the southern Aegean Sea, to remain vigilant and follow the instructions of local authorities, while being prepared to face any emergencies without causing panic.
